A municipal attorney is a legal advisor. It is his or her job to help a specific municipality consider options, and what benefits or disadvantages might be of proceeding in a given way. Municipal law is specific to a particular city or county, legally called a "municipality" and the government bodies within those cities or counties. It is the tool enabling city governments to serve their constituents within legal parameters.

It covers a wide range of issues, including police power, zoning, education policies, and property taxes. A municipal attorney may offer expertise regarding business, public safety, education, civil and constitutional rights, property taxes, law enforcement, contracts, procurement, licensing and permits, zoning, land use, employment law, transparency, and environmental regulation.
