Tourism is a leading industry in Oklahoma and Stilwell has many reasons to visit, from hosting the oldest continuous festival each May, to historic places and outdoor recreation. Our best feature, though, are the many kind and friendly people who call Stilwell home.
We are among the 14 counties included in the Cherokee Nation reservation and one of the end points of the Trail of Tears. Adair County was created from the Goingsnake and Flint Districts of the Cherokee Nation.
The Stilwell Strawberry Festival is the second Saturday in May, usually coinciding with Mother’s Day weekend. It includes sales of the tastiest berries on earth, a parade, crowning of the strawberry queen, a strawberry auction, tons of arts and crafts vendors, a carnival and rodeo.
We have a Beyond the Trail Cultural Arts District board which began hosting an Indigenous Day event in October, and is working to grow an arts district for everyone around the world to see the beautiful art created here, from traditional baskets and pottery, to fine art and more.
We offer unique food options from our food truck court to Mountain View Meats, Chicky’s, Mr. B’s Pizza, Okie Joe’s, Coleens Bistro and more.
Shopping opportunities unique to Stilwell include Tuell Shop, Rustic Lace, Fragrance and Flowers and Everything Nice downtown.
Tournaments for baseball, softball and soccer at Carson Park bring families to town. Outdoor recreation includes seasonal hunting, fishing, four-wheeler riding, hiking, camping, and swimming at our creeks, and add boating at Lake Tenkiller and kayaking and fishing at Stilwell Lake.
Stilwell is part of the Ozark Plateau Wildlife Refuge management area.
On a professional level, Hunt Mill Hollow provides organized luxury, guided hunts for pheasant, elk, boars and quail and a variety of options for glamping (glamorous camping) and day trips. The slide show photos on this page were all taken at Hunt Mill Hollow Ranch.
The newest outdoor entertainment is the national caliber WOKA Whitewater Park is where nature and adventure come together in Watts, at the north end of the county, by Siloam Springs, Arkansas. Built adjacent to the Illinois River, whitewater park features a 1,200 foot channel with 8 drop features, considered a premier destination for kayakers, surfers, paddle boarders and tubers. There are mountain bike trails near by.

History lovers can tour the museum at the Depot, managed by the Adair County Historical and Genealogical Association. The group also offers tours of historic properties around the county, monthly history programs and Lunch and Learn programs. We have a Veteran’s Memorial at the County Courthouse in Stilwell.
